Haven’t written in a long time. Lots of work, lots of partying, not a lot of self-time.
We went to Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur at the beginning of October and spent some time relaxing at the Mandarin Oriental. Took some pictures of the city from our room, made a short video about our trip, and shared some images from the hotel on Facebook. And suddenly that’s all that I have left from that trip, because 2 days ago my new hard drive decided to get corrupted, and everything that I saved on it is gone. Apart from those shots I’ve got shared on Facebook, there is nothing left. Fine, I’ve got memories of it anyway… what’s worse is that I had work stuff saved on that hard drive as well. As a professional photographer, it is a big deal. So when they tell you always have a backup, you should. Not to mention the wedding pictures that are more valuable than any money.
This leads me to another dilemma…
Macbook Dillemas
I had this computer of mine – a Macbook Pro 15-inch retina display for almost 5 years now, and it served and keeps serving me well. Ah, it has the screen burning issue (ghosting) which annoyed me profoundly in the beginning, but I got used to it. At the time that I bought it, I spent all my savings on it and could only afford the basic model with 8 GB RAM. Now every day I have to work with Lightroom, and Adobe Photoshop and recently had to do something in Adobe Premier, which refused to even start properly due to “your scratch disc is full”… When I make GIFs in Photoshop, I have the same message and at times I have to shut down all the other applications, which unfortunately doesn’t help much. I even paid 35 bucks to install CleanMyMac. Okay, let’s face it – I need to buy a new one. But the glorious Apple decided that in their new Macbook, we don’t need the memory card slot, and no USB3 connectors either… cause hey well, all of you fancy photographers will be fine with carrying 5 extension cables. You know what, after this situation with my hard drive that didn’t survive being carried around all the time – I don’t want to carry anything anymore. So I guess will buy last year’s model, which is basically the same as I have but with more power.
A lot of people reacted to my RIP the hard drive message on Facebook and told me I am stupid to save my images on hard drives these days when everyone is using cloud services. The problem is not in having to pay for it but in the size of my files and the upload speed provided by the existing UAE internet operators. To upload one raw Fujifilm file with my internet speed would take me at least 20 minutes. So this is not an option, really. Yesterday I went to Virgin Megastore and bought a new fancy schmancy Lacie hard drive. Let’s see how it goes with it. But for now, I am just happy I shared at least something on Facebook. Otherwise, those images would be gone forever.
