Shooting Half-Frame Style Photography on Fujifilm Mini Evo

Taxi driving on a sunny road lined with palm trees and lush greenery.

It’s been a moment since I went out and shot a significant amount of photos to scramble a post together, but yesterday I decided to see which of my instax printing//shooting devices still worked. For two of them, I needed batteries, but Fujifilm Mini Evo – that is both a camera and a printer – could be charged and used. I have the one that needs the mini usb cable, which kind of annoyed me cause I purposefully tried to get everything with usb-c cable but it is what it is.

Anyway, after it charged, I cycled through its modes and saw that it can do double exposures and split-frame photos (or half-frame). I always have fun doing a little double-exposure, but I thought – let me try to do some half-frames. The nice thing about doing it with this camera is that you can see the first half of the frame while you’re looking for the second one.

Now, the quality of the original photos is still 5 megapixels of questionable pixel mash-up, but remember – this was supposed to be shot for the purpose of printing it with the Instax Mini film. It definitely wouldn’t work as a billboard on Sheikh Zayed Road.

I had to add a lot of contrast (and in some cases a bit of color) for them to look the way they do below. Mostly with S-curve.

But what is the most important thing? I really had fun shooting these images.

I think, it is rather easy to see that these photos could work on the device’s screens, but not on the ultra-high-resolution computer screens.

Tips on Operating Fujifilm Mini Evo

While we are on the subject of this camera, I have to say – do not even try to shoot this at night. The harsh light is your friend. Also, drag the exposure compensation down a few stops. I put mine at -2/3, and it was not even enough.

The on/off button on this camera is in a such annoying place, that it would be a miracle if you manage to catch some fleeting moment with it – MOFO is slow. The shutter also has a delay, and not a small one.

But sometimes working around all these quirks pays off.

Hard to stay entertained with photography in summer in this country on a normal year. And this one is not.

Stay safe everyone.
